These words must be explained as follows acc. to Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 88ff.. The basis was the <b class="b3">τ-</b>stem <b class="b3">λι-τ-</b> in <b class="b3">λί-ς</b> and in the substantives <b class="b3">λῖτ-α</b>, <b class="b3">λιτ-ί</b>. Thematic enlargement gave <b class="b3">λιτ-ό-ς</b>; beside it a <b class="b3">ια-</b>deriv. in fem. <b class="b3">*λῖσσα</b> (from <b class="b3">*λῖτ-ι̯α</b>), with (through the orig. ablauting gen. <b class="b3">λισσῆς</b>) a new nom. <b class="b3">λισσή</b> with masc. <b class="b3">λισσός</b>. With <b class="b3">λίς</b>: <b class="b3">λῖσσα</b> cf. e.g. <b class="b3">θής</b> : <b class="b3">θῆσσα</b>, <b class="b3">Κρής</b> : <b class="b3">Κρῆσσα</b>. - From <b class="b3">λίς</b> the form <b class="b3">λεῖος</b> can hardly be separated; so <b class="b3">λι-τ-</b> zero grade to a lengthened grade <b class="b2">lēi-</b> (Fraenkel l.c.) or because of its monosyllabicity from <b class="b3">*λι-τ-</b> lengthned to <b class="b2">lei-</b> (cf. Schwyzer 350)? - There is no reason to postulate a separate word <b class="b3">λῖτ-α</b>, <b class="b3">λιτ-ί</b> [[linnen]] (s.
