Crete; uncertain.<br />Origin: XX [etym. unknown]<br />Etymology: For [[ἄλπνιστος]] Wackernagel KZ 43, 377 reads <b class="b3">*ἄλπιστος</b>, a primary superlative formation and attested as PN (A. Pers. 982; but text uncertain). The assumption of an old <b class="b2">r\/n-</b>stem, once popular, is unnecessary (the Cretan form would point to it). - <b class="b3">ἀλπ-</b> as <b class="b3">*Ϝαλπ-</b>, zero grade of <b class="b3">*Ϝελπ-</b> in [[ἔλπομαι]], [[ἐλπίς]], is doubtful (one expects <b class="b3">*Ϝλαπ-</b>).
