C. 1688, der auch Ant. 607 neben einander stellt τό τ' [[ἔπειτα]] καὶ τὸ μέλλον καὶ τὸ [[πρίν]], wie Aesch. vrbdt πολλὰ καὶ παρόντα καὶ μέλλοντ' ἔτι, Pers. 829; vgl. μέλλουσιν ἢ πάρεισιν, Eur. Heracl. 384; τὴν μέλλουσαν [[αὐτοῦ]] δύναμιν, Plat. Rep. VI, 494 c; εἰς τὴν μέλλουσαν πόλιν, in den künftigen Staat, Legg. III, 702 d; auch vollständiger, τὸ μέλλον ἀποβήσεσθαι, Theaet. 178 c. In einigen dieser Vrbdgn drückt es auch bestimmter das, was geschehen soll, aus. Denn – 2) das, was der Mensch vorzunehmen im Begriff ist, erscheint als Etwas, wozu er veranlaßt wird, was er thun soll, so daß bes. im impf. ἔμελλον der Begriff des <b class="b2">Sollens</b> liegt, u. zwar – a) nach dem Willen des Schicksals, was verhängt ist, mit dem Nebenbegriff des Unausbleiblichen, unfehlbar Erfolgenden, τὰ φρονέοντ' ἀνὰ θυμὸν ἅ ῥ' οὐ τελέεσθαι ἔμελλον, was (nach den Bestimmungen des Schicksals) nicht in Erfüllung gehen sollte, vgl. Il. 5, 686 Od. 2, 156; eben so οὐ πείσεσθαι ἔμελλεν, er sollte es nicht durch Ueberredung erreichen, Il. 20, 466 Od. 3, 146; [[τάχα]] δ' ἀνστήσεσθαι ἔμελλεν, d. i. es war vom Schicksal bestimmt, daß er sich bald wieder erheben sollte, Il. 2, 694, ἔμελλον ἔτι ξυνέσεσθαι ὀϊζυῖ [[πολλῇ]] Od. 7, 270, oft, gew. mit dem inf. fut., vgl. H. h. Ap. 521 Merc. 15 Cer. 454; seltener c. praes., [[μάλα]] δέ σφισιν ἔλπετο θυμὸς αὐτώ τε κτενέειν –, νήπιοι, οὐδ' ἄρ' ἔμελλον [[ἀναιμωτί]] γε νέεσθαι, Il. 17, 495, sie hofften, die beiden Männer zu tödten, die Thörichten, sie sollten nicht einmal ohne Blut, unverwundet heimkehren. H. h. Apoll. 379. Auch c. inf. aor., ἃς φάτο λισσόμενος, μέγα [[νήπιος]]· ἦ γὰρ ἔμελλεν οἷ αὐτῷ θάνατον – λιτέσθαι, Il. 16, 46. 18, 98; [[ὄρνις]], ὧν ὑφηγητῶν κτανεῖν ἔμελλον πατέρα, nach denen ich den Vater tödten sollte, Soph. O. R. 967, vgl. Phil. 1072 Ai. 908, der auch das partic. so braucht, τί γὰρ θνήσκειν ὁ μέλλων τοῦ χρόνου [[κέρδος]] φέροι; El. 1478, der sterben soll; ἔστω τὸ μέλλον Phil. 1238. – b) nach menschlicher Anordnung, περὶ τρίποδος γὰρ ἔμελλον θεύσεσθαι, um einen Dreifuß sollten sie wettlaufen, Il. 11, 700, nämlich nach der Bestimmung der Eleer. – Aber auch – 3) <b class="b2">müssen</b>; nach den Begriffen von Recht u. Pflicht, vgl. Nitzsch zu Od. 1, 232; καὶ [[λίην]] σέγ' ἔμελλε κιχήσεσθαι κακὰ ἔργα, dich mußte Unglück treffen, Od. 9, 477; nach muthmaßlicher Folgerung, nach welcher das Ergebniß als nothwendig aus der Thatsache hervorgehend bezeichnet werden soll, [[μέλλω]] που ἀπέχθεσθαι, ich muß wohl dem Zeus verhaßt sein, Il. 21, 83, nämlich nach meinen Schicksalen zu schließen; vgl. οὕτω που Διῒ μέλλει φίλον εἶναι, es muß wohl dem Zeus so belieben, wie der Erfolg zu zeigen scheint, 1, 116. 9, 23 u. öfter, wo wir auch mit mög en ausreichen; ἀλλὰ τὰ μέν που μέλλεν ἀγάσσεσθαι θεὸς [[αὐτός]], das mochte wohl die Gottheit selbst beneiden, Od. 4, 181; κελευσέμεναι δέ σ' ἔμελλε [[δαίμων]], ein Gott muß, mag's dir geheißen haben, ib. 274 u. 377; εἰ δ' οὕτω τοῦτ' ἐστίν, ἐμοὶ μέλλει φίλον εἶναι, wenn es so ist, so folgt nothwendig daraus, daß es mir so beliebt, Il. 1, 564. Schwächer ist die Bdtg in manchen Stellen, wo unser mög en, und die adv. <b class="b2">wohl, vielleicht, wahrscheinlich</b> ausreichen, aber auch <b class="b2">sol </b><b class="b2">len</b> zuweilen entspricht, welches bei uns auch nicht immer den ursprünglichen Nachdruck behält, u. die alten Gramm. es durch ἔοικεν erkl., μέλλεις δὲ σὺ ἴδμεναι, du wirst, magst es wohl wissen, vermuthlich weißt du es, Od. 4, 200, wo hinzugesetzt ist »denn ich kannte ihn nicht«; vgl. Il. 10, 326. 14, 125 Od. 4, 94; πολλάκι που μέλλεις [[ἀρήμεναι]], oft wohl magst du gefleht haben, 22, 322, wie ᾡ μέλλεις εὔχεσθαι, zu dem du vermuthlich flehst, Il. 11, 364; εἰ ἀεὶ δὴ μέλλοιμεν ἀγήρω τ' ἀθανάτω τ' ἔσσεσθαι, wenn wir immerdar unalternd u. unsterblich sein sollten, 12, 323; c. inf. aor., μέλλει πού τις καὶ φίλτερον ἄλλον [[ὀλέσσαι]], es mag wohl Mancher einen Geliebteren verloren haben, 24, 46, wie [[ἄλλοτε]] δή ποτε [[μᾶλλον]] ἐρωῆσαι πολέμοιο [[μέλλω]], d. i. ein andermal mag ich wohl eher das Ansehen gehabt haben, mich dem Kampfe zu entziehen, aber jetzt nicht, 13, 776; vgl. noch 18, 362 Od. 14, 133. 18, 138, wo der inf. praes. gebraucht ist, καὶ γὰρ ἐγώ ποτ' ἔμελλον ἐν ἀνδράσιν [[ὄλβιος]] εἶναι, ich sollte od. mochte einst glücklich sein, jetzt bin ich es nicht, wie Od. 1, 232, μέλλεν ποτὲ [[οἶκος]] ἀφνειὸς ἔμμεναι, einst, so lange er noch zu Hause war, sollte es reich sein, jetzt ist es nicht mehr so, νῦν δ' ἑτέρως ἐβάλοντο θεοί – So auch bei den Folgdn; τούτων ἐγὼ οὐκ ἔμελλον ἐν θεοῖσι τὴν δίκην δώσειν, Soph. Ant. 454, ich mochte nicht, vgl. Ai. 438 u. auch El. 538, οὐκ ἔμελλε τῶνδέ μοι δώσειν δίκην; mußte er nicht büßen? u. so auch mit ausgelassenem Verbum, ᾔδη, τί δ' οὐκ ἔμελλον; ich wußte es, was sollte ich nicht? Soph. Ant. 444, vgl. III, 679 d, vgl. Soph. 266 d. – 4) wie auch bei uns <b class="b2">sich bedenken, besinnen so</b> viel ist wie <b class="b2">zögern</b>, zaudern, so tritt auch in [[μέλλω]] der Begriff »thun wollen« einseitig hervor, nämlich ohne wirklich zu thun, zu handeln, auch anstehen, Bedenken tragen, τί μέλλεις καὶ κατοικτίζῃ [[μάτην]]; Aesch. Prom. 36, u. oft in dieser Verbindung; auch κοὐκ ἔτ' ἦν μέλλειν [[ἀκμή]], es war nicht Zeit zu zögern, Pers. 399; ἄγομαι δὴ κοὐκ ἔτι [[μέλλω]], Soph. Ant. 830; μάλιστ' [[Ἄρης]] στυγεῖ μέλλοντας, Eur. Heracl. 723; ἐγκονεῖτε, σπεύδεθ', ὡς ὁ καιρὸς οὐχὶ μέλλειν, Ar. Plut. 255; χώρει – οὐ μέλλειν ἐχρῆν, Av. 364, vgl. Ran. 1505; ἴωμεν δὴ καὶ μὴ μέλλωμεν ἔτι, Plat. Legg. IV, 712 b; μὴ μέλλωμεν, Xen.
