   A burst with a noise, crackle, sputter, as liquids when thrown upon the fire, σφαραγεῦντο δέ οἱ πυρὶ ῥίζαι the roots of his eye crackled or hissed (when Odysseus burnt them with the hot stake), Od.9.390.    II groan with fulness, to be full to bursting, οὔθατα γὰρ σφαραγεῦντο ib.440.
