Rather to <b class="b3">κάραβος</b> as popular short form; also <b class="b3">κουρίς</b>, <b class="b3">κωρίς</b> must be popular formations. Bechtel, Gr. Dial. 1, 58 a. 2, 243f. assumed <b class="b3">*καϜαρις</b> resp. <b class="b3">*κωϜαρις</b>. Cf. Adjarian Mélanges Boisacq 1, 4, who considers <b class="b3">καρίς</b> together with Arm. [[karič]] [[scorpion]] as an Asiatic loan. The variation is not understood; DELG pleads for an association with <b class="b3">κώρα</b>, <b class="b3">κούρα</b> [[girl]] (hardly understandable).
