Ep. 88b).<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]<br />Etymology: Except as [[servant]] <b class="b3">θεράπνη</b> in Eur. and successors means also [[dwelling]], [[habitation]] (<b class="b3">θεράπναι αὑλῶνες</b>, <b class="b3">σταθμοί</b> H.), which reminds of <b class="b3">δοῦλος ἡ οἰκία</b> H. (cf. s. v.); one might assume the meaning [[house]], coll. [[servants]]. From <b class="b3">θεράπνη</b> [[house]] we can hardly separate Laconian GN <b class="b3">Θεράπνα</b>, <b class="b3">-ναι</b>; this points to Pre-Greek origin of the whole group. Kretschmer Glotta 28, 269f. (also id. Glotta 24, 90ff.; on meaning and spread also E. Kretschmer Glotta 18, 72ff.) wrongly sees it as "protoindogermanische" variant of <b class="b3">τέραμνα</b>; (with <b class="b3">θέραψ</b> Lat. [[trabs]] [[beam]] would be cognate). Thus v. Windekens Le Pélasgique 89f. But <b class="b3">θεράπνη</b> can be derived from <b class="b3">θεράπων</b> (s. Sommer Nominalkomp. 145; on the secondary <b class="b3">ντ-</b>stem cf. <b class="b3">θεράπαινα</b> and Schwyzer 526 w. n. 3); cf. Schwyzer 489 w. n. 4. - N. van Brock, Rev. Hitt.
