Fr. 696); also <b class="b3">στύπος</b> = <b class="b3">στύππη</b> (<b class="b3">κάλοι ἀπὸ στύπου</b> Gal.). -- The rare <b class="b3">στύππη</b>, which from a Dorian colony in Lower Italy came in Latin ([[stuppa]], [[stūpa]]; s. W.-Hofmann s. v.), was in Greek replaced by the derivation <b class="b3">στυππεῖον</b> (after the instr. nouns and other concreta in <b class="b3">-εῖον</b>); besides <b class="b3">στίππυον</b> (<b class="b3">-ύον</b>?; accent uncertain) after <b class="b3">θρύον</b>, <b class="b3">γήθυον</b> a. o. with concomitant dissim. <b class="b3">στυππ-</b> > <b class="b3">στιππ-</b>. -- No certain agreement outside Greek. Of old (Curtius 216 a.o.) compared with Skt. <b class="b2">stū́pa-</b>, <b class="b2">stupá-</b> m. [[crown]] further connected with [[στύφω]]; s. v. -- Furnée 259 etc. compares <b class="b3">τοπει̃̃ον</b> [[cord]], [[rope]] without further comment; if this is correct, it shows that the word is Pre-Greek. The variations show that the word is Pre-Greek (note <b class="b3">π</b>\/<b class="b3">ππ</b>). P. 366 n. 95 he noted "Der Fremdwortchrakter von στυππεῖον ist unverkennbar".
