As supposed verbal noun, prop. *"slipping, putting in, hiding" (> <b class="b2">hiding place</b>), <b class="b3">μυχός</b> can be connected partly with Arm. [[mxem]] <b class="b2">put in, immerse</b>, IE (<b class="b2">s)mukh-</b>, partly with a Germ. group, e.g. OWNo. <b class="b2">smjúga</b> <b class="b2">slip in, through</b> (with [[smuga]] f. <b class="b2">small opening, hidingplace</b>), MHG [[smiegen]] [[schmiegen]]', if from IE <b class="b2">*smeugh-</b>; the Germ. words, however, can also go back on <b class="b2">*smeuk</b> and agree then as regards the velar with OCS <b class="b2">smykati sę</b> <b class="b2">drag on, cooper</b>, Lith. <b class="b2">smùkti</b> <b class="b2">glide (away)</b> etc.; the variation [[k]] : [[kh]] : [[gh]] can partly be due to phonetic developments (assimilation of consonants), partly to mixing with related forms. -- Further combinations, which with a wordfamily of this meaning, are easily lost endlessly, in WP. 2, 254f., Pok. 744f., Fraenkel s. <b class="b2">smùkti</b>, also Vasmer s. <b class="b2">smýkatь</b>; everywhere with further forms. -- On <b class="b3">μύσχον τὸ ἀνδρεῖον καὶ γυναικεῖον μόριον</b> H., by Fick KZ 43, 149 (s. also Bechtel Dial. 3, 317) connected through <b class="b3">*μύχ-σκον</b>, cf. on 2. <b class="b3">μόσχος</b>. - Fur. 364 thinks the word is Pre-Greek, but without further arguments.
