Legg. 858e, <b class="b3">προσ-ανα-</b> πτύσσω Arist.); so <b class="b3">-σσ-</b> rather Ionism than to avoid <b class="b3">τ</b>: <b class="b3">ττ</b> (Schwyzer 319 n. 1; cf. 755 n. 2) ? As Yot-present <b class="b3">πτύσσω</b> stands for <b class="b3">*πτύχ-ι̯ω</b>; so it can be taken as denominative to <b class="b3">πτύχ-ες</b>. --Etymolog. unclear. The connection with the unclear Skt. <b class="b2">pyúkṣṇa-</b> (only in the comp. <b class="b2">pyúkṣṇa-veṣṭita-</b>), which goes back on Brugmann Grundr.2 I 277, is for several reasons very suspect; s. Mayrhofer s.v. On other hypothesen s. Bq s.v., WP. 1, 189, W.-Hofmann s. [[fugiō]] (everywhere rightly rejected). Cf. also Merlingen <b class="b3">Μνήμης χάριν</b> 2, 57. -- Furnée 318 considers the word a Pre-Greek, which may well be correct, but his connection with <b class="b3">πυκ-νός</b> etc. is not convincing.
