The explanation by Ebel KZ 5, 70f. (taken over by Schwyzer 614 n. 4) from <b class="b3">ἔνι οἵ</b>, <b class="b3">ἔνι ὅτε</b> = <b class="b3">ἔστιν οἵ</b>, <b class="b3">ἔσθ</b>' <b class="b3">ὅτε</b> must be given up, as <b class="b3">ἔνι</b> as [[is]], [[are]] is certain only since V-VIp ([[s]]. <b class="b3">ἔν</b>). Best seems the idea of Benfey, futher argumented by Wackernagel Hellenistica 6 n. 1 (= Kl. Schr. 2, 1037 n. 1) as <b class="b3">ἕν</b> [[one]] (like [[einige]] to [[eins]]); the psilosis would be Ion. For the ending cf. <b class="b3">μύριοι</b>, <b class="b3">χίλιοι</b>; <b class="b3">ἐνίοτε</b>, <b class="b3">ἐνιαχῆ</b>, <b class="b3">-οῦ</b> like <b class="b3">ὅτε</b>, <b class="b3">πότε</b>, <b class="b3">πολλαχῆ</b>, <b class="b3">-οῦ</b> etc. - Improbable Brugmann IF 28, 355ff.
