[[sheep fleece]] (Hp.).<br />Derivatives: Several H.-glosses: <b class="b3">ῥήνεα πρόβατα</b> (cf. <b class="b3">κτήνεα</b>); <b class="b3">ῥᾶνα ἄρνα</b> (Elean?), <b class="b3">ῥύεινα ἄρνα</b>. <b class="b3">Κύπριοι</b> (for <b class="b3">Ϝρην-</b>?); prob. also <b class="b3">τρανόν</b> (for <b class="b3">*Ϝρ-</b>) <b class="b3">ἑξαμηνιαῖον πρόβατον</b> (but the <b class="b3">α</b> then remains unexplained). -- Here perh the islandname <b class="b2">Ρήνεια (near Delos</b>).<br />Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]<br />Etymology: The above forms differ only in ablaut from [[ἀρήν]] (s.v.) < <b class="b3">Ϝαρήν</b>; as basis one assumes best <b class="b2">*u̯rēn-</b>, which may agree with Lat. [[rēnō]] <b class="b2">garment of reindeer(?)-skin with the Germans</b> (Germ. LW [loanword].; s. W.-Hofmann s.v.), but s. Benvenist, Rev. Ph. 38(1964)20-12. The hell. ep. <b class="b3">ῥήνεσσι</b> and <b class="b3">ῥῆνα</b> may well have been built after <b class="b3">πολύ-ρρην</b> and oher compp., but this explanation fits neither for Hippocrat. <b class="b3">ῥηνικός</b>, <b class="b3">ῥῆνιξ</b> nor for the glosses of Hesychius; further Sommer Nominalkomp. 66 ff., Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 161 (also Schwyzer 568).
