S., D. H.).<br />Origin: XX [etym. unknown]<br />Etymology: Since Bezzenberger BB 27, 168 mostly taken as lengthened grade form of Germ., e.g. Goth. [[haims]] [[village]] (cf. on <b class="b3">κεῖμαι</b>), Balt., e.g. Lith. <b class="b2">káima(s</b>) <b class="b2"> (farmers</b>) village', <b class="b2">kiẽmas</b> [[farmstead]], [[farmers]] village'. But a lengthened grade cannot be accounted for. (B. connects also <b class="b3">κῶμος</b>; diff. on this Persson Beitr. 1, 160; s. <b class="b3">κῶμος</b> and <b class="b3">κώμυς</b>.) Thus the word is unexplained.
