Since Fick and Curtius (s. Bq) it is usually (though with a certain reserve, WP. 2, 690) as IE <b class="b3">σμύρις</b> <b class="b2">emery-powder</b> connected with a Germ.-Celt. word for <b class="b2">smear, fat etc.</b>, e.g. OHG [[smero]] [[Schmer]], OIr. <b class="b2">smi(u)r</b> [[marrow]] (also Lat. [[medulla]]?); but this does not explain the Greek <b class="b2">-u-</b>; cf. <b class="b3">μύραινα</b> [which is a Pre-Greek word]. The isolated <b class="b3">σμυρίζω</b> [[anoint]] can, if not old, rest upon association with <b class="b3">σμύρις</b>, <b class="b3">σμύρνα</b>. --
