By Fick 1, 507, Johansson IF 2, 35 a. o. connected with <b class="b3">μαδάω</b> [[drip]], <b class="b3">μέζεα</b>, <b class="b3">μήδεα</b> [[male sexual parts]] etc., with further acc. to Fick 2, 215 (doubting) Celt., e.g. MIr. [[mess]] (< <b class="b2">*med-tu-</b>) [[gland]]; against connection of <b class="b3">μαδάω</b> WP. 2, 231 (which is impossible). Connection with <b class="b2">med-</b> [[measure]] in <b class="b3">μέδιμνος</b> a. o. has also been proposed (Curtius 243 doubting, Osthoff IF Anz. 5, 19 A. 1); very doubtful.
