OE [[swelan]], NHG [[schwelen]] (full grade), Lith. <b class="b2">svìlti</b> (zero grade of a disyllabic root: <b class="b2">*su̯elH-</b>) <b class="b2">singe (intr.), burn without flame</b> with many derivatives. The Greek forms present <b class="b3">εἱλ-</b> beside <b class="b3">ἑλ-</b>, which cannot be explained. From a root <b class="b2">*su̯el-</b> a form <b class="b2">h₁u̯el-</b> is hardly possible. Unless there is an unknown phonetic development, the problem cannot be solved: analogical spread of <b class="b3">εἱλ-</b>?
