After Kretschmer Glotta 13, 132f. and 27, 24 cross of <b class="b3">*σίς</b> [[swine]] (cf. <b class="b3">σίκα</b> s. [[σῦς]]) and <b class="b3">πίαλος</b>, the last of which is however only a secondary byform of <b class="b3">πιαλέος</b> (s. [[πῖαρ]]). Other attempts: to Germ., e.g. OE [[Þwīnan]] [[become weak]], [[die away]] (IE <b class="b2">*tu̯ī-</b> beside [[tā]][[[i]]]- in <b class="b3">τήκω</b>; Lidén IF 19, 351 f.); to OCS [[ty-ti]] [[become fat]] (IE <b class="b2">*tu-ia</b>, <b class="b2">-ī</b> f. [[fatness]]; WP. 1, 706 asking; cf. Bechtel Lex. s.v.). Against the semant. possible identification of <b class="b3">σίαλος</b> [[grease]], [[lard]] with <b class="b3">σίαλον</b> [[spittle]] (Lidén l.c.) speaks the primary <b class="b3">σίαι πτύσαι</b>; also the hapax <b class="b3">σίαλος</b> [[grease]] may have arisen through ellipsis of <b class="b3">σίαλος</b> [[fat swine]]; cf. e.g. Fr. [[veau]] [[calb]], also <b class="b2">calf (-calf-leather</b>). -- The word will almost certainly be Pre-Greek.
