Chr., Poll.).<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin] (V)<br />Etymology: Generally taken to <b class="b3">σκέλος</b>, semant. not impossible, but certainly not correct; the aspirated form would have to be secondary (Hiersche Ten. asp. 217). As however in <b class="b3">σκέλος</b> the writing <b class="b3">σκ-</b> is fixed (<b class="b3">σχέλος</b> only in an inscr. Delos IIIa), the aspirate in <b class="b3">σχελίς</b>, not counting the oldest attestations, is surprising. Then <b class="b3">σκελίδες</b> innovation after <b class="b3">σκέλος</b>? -- The variation is the one usual in Pre-Greek (not in Furnée).
