Mostly taken as compound of <b class="b3">κρίνω</b> and <b class="b3">εἴλη</b> (with compositional <b class="b3">-ι</b>, Schwyzer 447f.;?), so prop. "distinguished by the sun"; one takes <b class="b3">εἴλη</b> not as normally [[heat of the sun]] but as [[sunlight]], a meaning only known for Dor. <b class="b3">Ϝέλα</b> and which will not be old. Connection with 1. or 2. <b class="b3">εἰλέω</b> makes no sense. Difficult suggestion by DELG.
