Cf. <b class="b3">εὐλάζει σαπριᾳ̃</b>, <b class="b3">σκωληκιᾳ̃</b> H. One also mentions <b class="b3">ὑάλη σκώληξ Η</b>. supposed to stand for <b class="b3">ὑαλή</b>; it is quite doubtful that this form is cognate.<br />Origin: XX [etym. unknown]<br />Etymology: For <b class="b3">*ἐ-Ϝλ-ή</b> (Schwyzer 224), but what would be this <b class="b3">ἐ-</b>? (a prothetic vowel is no longer possible, unless one assumes <b class="b2">*h₁u̯el-</b>; but <b class="b2">*h₁ul-</b> would give <b class="b3">ὑλ-</b>). If not with metathesis from <b class="b3">*Ϝελ-ή</b> (cf. to [[εὐρύς]]), which is improbable. Old verbal noun to 2. <b class="b3">εἰλέω</b>, <b class="b3">ἴλλω</b> [[turn]], [[wind]], so pop. [[winding]], [[what winds itself]]. - Cf. [[ἕλμις]]. - The word may well be Pre-Greek.
