Lex. 24).<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]<br />Etymology: Formation like <b class="b3">αἱμάλωψ</b> [[mass of blood]], [[bloodshot place]] (Hp., pap.), <b class="b3">νυκτάλωψ</b> [[seeing in the night]] = <b class="b2">day-blind(ness)</b>; sec. <b class="b2">night-blind, night-blindness</b>, to which <b class="b3">ἡμεράλωψ</b>. - On the obscured ending <b class="b3">-ωψ</b> s. Schwyzer 426 n. 4; the basis must have been a nominal <b class="b3">λ-</b>stem (cf. e. g. <b class="b3">αἴθαλος</b>, <b class="b3">αἰθάλη</b>), in its turn derived from a <b class="b2">mo-</b>stem (cf. zu <b class="b3">θυμός</b>). (Not to Skt. <b class="b2">*dhūmara-</b>, from where <b class="b2">dhūmrá-</b>) - However, our word will have nothing to do with [[seeing]], nor can <b class="b3">θυμ-</b> be identified.
