Connection with [[ἔμπης]] [[in any case]] (s. v.) is semantically difficult. Because of the Swed. expression for [[care for something]] <b class="b2">fästa sig vid något</b> prop. "to attach yourself to" one might think of an original <b class="b3">*ἐμ-πάγ-ι̯ομαι</b>, to <b class="b3">ἐμ-παγῆναι</b> (Ion. <b class="b3">πακ-τός</b>, <b class="b3">πακτοῦν</b>). - Not with Lagercrantz KZ 34, 392ff. from <b class="b3">*ἔμπω</b> after <b class="b3">μαπέειν</b> [[take]] (formally impossible). Unclear <b class="b3">ἐμπαστῆρας μύθων πιστωτάς</b>, <b class="b3">μάρτυρας</b> H., which Latte corrects in <b class="b3">*ἐμπιστῆρας</b>. - A.<b class="b3">Β</b>. (RPh. 70, 1996) connects <b class="b2">*peh₂-</b> [[protect]] (Beekes, Development 173); but cf. Pok. 787 <b class="b2">*peh₂k\/g-</b> [[fit together]].
