Two hypotheses: 1. to Skt. <b class="b2">iṣ-</b> [[wish]] (pres. <b class="b2">iccháti</b>), either from <b class="b2">*iso-tāt-</b> (Curtius 402; thus Schwyzer 528 n. 8) or <b class="b2">*isto-tāt-</b> from the ptc. <b class="b2">*istós</b> = Skt. <b class="b2">iṣṭá-</b> [[wished]] (Chantr. Form. 294); 2. to [[ἵεμαι]] [[hasten]], [[desire]] from <b class="b3">*Ϝιό-της</b> or, with haplological hortening, <b class="b3">*Ϝιοτό-της</b>, from <b class="b3">*Ϝίοτος</b> [[wishing]] = Lat. (<b class="b2">in-)vītus</b> (s. on [[ἵεμαι]]; Sommer Lautstud. 12f.); however, [[ἵεμαι]] has a long [[i]]. - Improbable Leumann Hom. Wörter 127ff. (with criticism on the preceding), who explains [[ἰότητι]] from a false division of [[δηιοτῆτι]] (<b class="b3">-τος</b>) [[enmity]] in <b class="b3">δη ἰότητι</b> (<b class="b3">-τος</b>); the Boeot. PN <b class="b3">Θειο-Ϝίοτος</b>, which speaks strongly for an original [[Ϝιότητι]], would have been built on ep. <b class="b3">θεῶν ἰότητι</b>; against Leumann Fraenkel Gnomon 23, 373.
