[[ὀρεύς]] s. v.<br />Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [?] <b class="b2">*(u̯)eru̯-</b>?<br />Etymology: Not certainly explained. -- An orig. (h)[[όρϜος]] (= Corc.) can stand for still older <b class="b3">*ϜόρϜος</b> (Schwyzer 306 a. 226 f.) and can be connected wih Lat. [[urvāre]] (<b class="b2">amb-</b>) <b class="b2">surround with a (boundary)furrow</b> (Fest. from Enn., Dig.) as a cognate; the basic noun [[urvus]] [[circuitus civitatis]] (gloss.; transm. [[urus]]) can agree except for he ablaut (IE <b class="b2">*u̯r̥u̯os</b> against <b class="b2">*u̯oru̯os</b>). Here also Osc. <b class="b2">uruvú</b> from PItal. <b class="b2">*urvā</b>, if with Schulze ZGLE 549 n. 1 a.o. [[boundaryfurrow]], [[border]] (cf. Vetter Hb. d. ital. Dial. 1, 442). Further connection wih [[ἐρύω]] [[draw]] (s.v.) is then possible. -- Also an alternative basis <b class="b3">*ὄρϜος</b> (w. second. asper) can be combined with Lat.
