Nachr. 1943, 8; Chantraine Formation 118; improbable Benveniste Origines 56), with secondary <b class="b3">κ-</b>enlargement (Chantraine 383, Schwyzer 496 n. 6) [[θρῆνυξ]], <b class="b3">-υκος</b> (Euph.), [[θρᾶνυξ]] (Corinn.).<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]<br />Etymology: If <b class="b3">νο-</b> or. <b class="b3">νυ-</b> is a suffix, we can connect the aor. inf. <b class="b3">θρή-σασθαι</b> (only Philet. 14 [IV-IIIa]: <b class="b3">θρήσασθαι πλατάνῳ γ</b><[[ρ]]><b class="b3">αίῃ ὕπο</b>), usually rendered with [[sit down]]. But the original meaning must rather have been <b class="b2">support oneself (on)</b> v.t., if the word is cognate with [[θρόνος]]; [[θρᾶνος]], [[θρῆνυς]] then "the support, the bearer".
