[[bandage]] (Gal.).<br />Origin: XX [etym. unknown]<br />Etymology: As the seemingly primary [[σκέπω]] is only late attested, the question rises, whether it must not be understood as backformation to the denominative [[σκεπάζω]] (Schwyzer 684) or to <b class="b3">σκέπ-η</b> (cf. <b class="b3">στέγ-ω</b>: <b class="b3">-η</b>), <b class="b3">-ας</b>. Against it speaks only the ep. verbal adj. [[περίσκεπτος]], which however is used only in a standing expression in the Od. and perhaps as later (Arat., Call. a. o.) must be connected with [[σκέπτομαι]]. -- Isolated. Since Berneker connected wiht a formally and phonetically deviant Balto-Slav. word for [[cap]], [[hood]], e.g. Lith. <b class="b2">kepùre</b>, Russ. <b class="b2">čepéc</b>; s.
