[[μῆρα]] (Schwyzer 581, Schw.-Debrunner 37) can be identified with Lat. [[membra]] n. pl. [[bodyparts]] (Bezzenberger BB 1, 340 f.); basis then <b class="b2">*mēms-r-ā</b>. A nasalless form <b class="b2">*mēs-r-</b> however is as for OIr. [[mīr]] [[piece]], [[bite]] also possible and phonetically rather to be preferred (cf. Schwyzer 282). The phonetically reminding Slav. word, e.g. Russ. <b class="b2">myazdrá</b> [[fleshy side of the skin]] is both in meaning and in form difficult to connect, s. Vasmer s. v. The basis would have been a word for [[flesh]], IE <b class="b2">*mēms(-o</b>)- n. in Skt. <b class="b2">māṃsá-</b>, Goth. [[mimz]] etc.; besides with loss od the nasals (as in the word for [[moon]]; s. 2. [[μήν]]) IE <b class="b2">*mēs-</b> n. in Skt. <b class="b2">mā́s-</b>. -- (Not here [[μῆνιγξ]] (s. v.). -- Further forms in W.-Hofmann s. [[membrum]]; also WP. 2, 262 and Pok. 725. Older lit. in Bq.
