Aristonic.<b class="b2"> δεύτεροι</b>: ὕστεροι. καὶ »[[δεύτατος]] ἦλθεν (Iliad. 19, 51)« ἀντὶ τοῦ [[ἔσχατος]]; Scholl. Aristonic. Nun hängt aber δεύεσθαι selbst mit δύο zusammen; es ist mit Guna von der den Begriff der Trennung ausdrückenden Wurzel δυ- oder δFι-gebildet; von dieser Wurzel kommt δύο, das die Sonderung in Zwei bezeichnende Zahlwort, und δεύεσθαί τινος, von Etwas getrennt sein, es entbehren. Δεύτερος findet sich von Homer an überall, das neutrum auch adverolat, »zweitens«, »zum zweiten Male«; bei Homer öfters in den Formen [[δεύτερος]] und δεύτερον; andere Formen nur im 23. Buche der Ilias: δευτέρῳ vs. 265. 750, δεύτεροι vs. 248. 498, δεύτερα vs. 538. In der Odyssee nur δεύτερον, 8, 1619, 354. 18, 24. 19, 65. 22, 69. Homer setzt gerne αὖ, [[αὖτε]], [[αὖτις]] hinzu; er gebraucht das Wort vom <b class="b2">Raume</b>, von der <b class="b2">Zeit</b> und vom <b class="b2">Range</b>, welche Kategorien sich aber meistens nicht genau sondern lassen.
