Aristarch erklärte es bei Homer – 1) = [[ὅμως]], <b class="b2">dennoch, doch</b>, 2) = [[ὁμῶς]], ὁμοίως, [[ἐπίσης]], <b class="b2">gleicherweise, gleichmäßig</b>. In der letzteren Bedeutung z. B. Iliad. 14, 174 [[ἔμπης]] ἐς γαῖάν τε καὶ οὐρανὸν ἵκετ' ἀυτμή, Odyss. 18, 354 [[ἔμπης]] μοι δοκέει δαΐδων [[σέλας]] ἔμμεναι [[αὐτοῦ]] καὶ κεφαλῆς, vgl. Odyss. 19, 37 Iliad. 17, 632 u. s. Lehrs Aristarch. ed. 2 p. 142. Die Erklärung = <b class="b2">gleicherweise, gleichmäßig</b> paßt unläugbar an manchen Stellen und ergiebt sich zwanglos aus dem Ursprunge des Wortes, ἐν πᾶσιν, in allen (Theilen, Stücken, Rücksichten, Beziehungen u. s. w.). Eben so zwanglos ergiebt sich aus dem Ursprunge des Wortes die andere Bedeutung = <b class="b2">dennoch, doch</b>, ἐν πᾶσιν, in allen Fällen, unter allen Umständen, also auch unter den im betreffenden Falle obwaltenden Umständen, bei Allem dem; und unläugbar paßt auch diese Erklärung an manchen Stellen. Daß sie <b class="b2">überall</b> passe u. allei n festzuhalten sei, behaupten Einige; daß die andere Bedeutung = <b class="b2">gleicherweise, gleichmäßig, überall</b> passe u. alle in festzuhalten sei, dürfte Niemand behaupten. An machen Stellen wird unläugbar [[ἔμπης]] sehr passend genau mit den Worten der Grundbedeutung selbst übersetzt, =<b class="b2"> in allen Fällen, auf jeden Fall, unterallen Umständen</b>, z. B. Iliad. 12, 326 [[ἔμπης]] γὰρ κῆρες ἐφεστᾶσιν θανάτοιο μυρίαι, ἃς οὐκ ἔστι φυγεῖν βροτὸν οὐδ' ὑπαλύξαι; freilich kann man auch hier [[ἔμπης]] γάρ übersetzen = »<b class="b2">ja doch</b>«.
