With [[πόρτις]] Arm. <b class="b2">ort`</b> [[calf]] can be identical except for the stemauslaut (gen. etc. <b class="b2">ort`-u</b>); on Gr. [[τ]] for IE <b class="b2">*th</b> (= Arm. [[t]]) cf. cases like [[πλατύς]] and [[ὀστέον]]. One has compared Skt. <b class="b2">pr̥thu-ka-</b> m. [[young]], [[child]], [[young animal]], but the connection with [[ort]], [[πόρτις]] is doubted by Mayrhofer s. v. (s. also id. Sprache 7, 180 f.) with Brugmann on good grounds. A further cognate is supposed in Germ. in MHG [[verse]], NHG [[Färse]] f. [[young cow]] (PGm. <b class="b2">*fársī</b> < IE <b class="b2">*pór-s-ī</b> ), to which further also OHG [[far]], [[farro]], OE [[fearr]] m. [[Farre]], [[younger bull]] (PGm. <b class="b2">*farzá(n</b>)- < IE <b class="b2">*por-s-ó-</b>). The word may belong to the IE verb for [[give birth]] (prop. [[bring forth]]) in Lat. [[pariō]] (WP. 2, 41, Pok. 818, W.-Hofmann s. v.). It has been connected also with [[πορεῖν]] etc. (s. v.). After Solmsen a.o. prop. "(new)born"; ? -- Lith.
