(Il.).<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]<br />Etymology: The schol. on Ven. A and Bechtel Lex. connect [[σοφός]] (but the [[ἀ-]] would be privative, with a non-Greek adj.?). One compared [[Σίσυφος]], <b class="b3">σέσυφος πανοῦργος</b> H. Fur. 337 further compares <b class="b3">αἰσύφιος δεινός</b>, [[ψευδης]], [[ἀπατεών]] H. (<b class="b3">-ος</b> Kyr.), which seems to fit well. So prob. a substr. word.
