Sc. 255, od. bes. für den Theil desselben, in welchem die Verdammten ihre Strafe büßen, Ggstz der elysischen Gefilde, Voß Virg. Georg. 1, 36. – Bei Hes. Th. 822 erscheint er personificirt, als Vater des Typhoeus, von der Gäa erzeugt. – Der plur. τὰ Τάρταρα, Hes. Th. 119. 841, u. öfter bei sp. D., wozu die Gramm. das neutr. τὸ Τάρταρον angenommen haben; ἡ [[Τάρταρος]] findet sich Pind. P. 1, 15 u. Nic. Th. 204, ἰλυόεσσα, in allgemeiner Bdtg, Abgrund. – Es scheint übrigens ein onomatopoetisches Wort mit dem Ausdrucke des Schauderhaften zu sein, vgl. ähnliche reduplleirte Wortbildungen, [[βάρβαρος]], [[μάρμαρος]], [[βόρβορος]].
