Petersilie gehört, lat. apium; ἐλεόθρεπτον, Il. 2, 776; λειμῶνες μαλακοὶ ἴου ἠδὲ σελίνου θήλεον, Od. 5, 72; die Alten aßen die Wurzeln und brauchten die Blätter wegen ihres kräftigen, erquickenden Geruchs gern zu Kränzen, mit denen bes. die isthmischen u. die nemeischen Sieger gekränzt wurden; [[πλόκος]] σελίνων, Pind. Ol. 13, 33; Δωρίων σελίνων [[στεφάνωμα]], I. 2, 16, vgl. 7, 64; Ar. Vesp. 480; Theocr. 3, 22; und in Prosa, σελίνων πεπλεγμένος, Luc. gymn. 9. Man schmückte auch die Grabsteine damit, dah. sprichwörtlich von einem gefährlichen Kranken σελίνου δεῖται, er braucht Eppich, d. i. er wird bald sterben, Diogen. 8, 57 u. Suid.; vgl. Euphor. bei Plut. Symp. 5, 3, 3 u. Mein. dazu p. 82. – Wegen der krausen Blätter des Eppichs heißt krauses Haar σελίνων οὐλοτέρη, Philodem. 10 (V, 121); deshalb leiten es Einige von [[ἑλίσσω]], [[ἕλιξ]] ab; Andere führen es auf [[ἕλος]] zurück, da der Eppich am liebsten in wasserreichen Gegenden wächst. – Nach Hesych. auch die weibliche Schaam. – [Ep. ad. 643 (VII, 621) ist ι kurz gebraucht.]
