Boßhardt Die Nom. auf <b class="b3">-ευς</b> 98)?<br />Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [??] <b class="b2">*h₁eni-h₂kʷ-</b> [[reproach]]<br />Etymology: As verbal noun to <b class="b3">ἐνίσσω ἐνιπ-ή</b> must have had a labio-velar <b class="b2">kʷ̯</b>(on the phonetics Risch 245, Schwyzer 704 w. n. 11). Brugmann further connected [[ὀπιπεύω]] (s. v.), Skt. <b class="b2">ī́kṣate</b> [[see]] etc., what he supported (IF 12, 31) by referring to [[ὄπις]] [[reverent seeing]], also [[retribution]], [[punishment]]); but see below. Thus Porzig Satzinhalte 228: [[ἐνίσσω]] orig. <b class="b2">look damaging at </b>, [[ἐνιπή]] [[malign look]]. Less certain is Brugmanns further combination with (rather unclear) [[ἴψαο]], [[ἴψεται]] (s. [[ἴπτομαι]]), about [[oppress]], [[damage]]. This is connected with [[ἰάπτω]] < <b class="b2">*h₂i-h₂ekʷ-i̯-</b>; so [[ἴπτομαι]] from <b class="b2">*h₂i-h₂kʷ-</b> (Kuiper, Glotta 21. 282ff, MKNAW 14: 5, 25 n. 1. <b class="b3">ἐνι-πή</b> then < <b class="b2">*h₁eni-h₂kʷ̇-</b>.
