A breathe hard: used by Hom. in pres. part., panting, as after running, τὼ δ' ἀσθμαίνοντε κιχήτην Il.10.376; gasping for breath, of one dying, ὅ γ' ἀσθμαίνων . . ἔκπεσε δίφρου 5.585, cf. 10.496, Pi.N.3.48: pres. ind., Hp.Morb.3.7, Arist.Pr.905b33: impf., Luc.DMeretr.5.4; οὐδὲν ἀσθμαίνων without an effort, A.Eu.651; ἀ. τι pant for a thing, Hld.4.3: c. acc. cogn., ἀ. πυρὸς δριμεῖαν ὁμοκλήν Opp.H.4.14.
