Ζῆν οὐκ ἄξιος, ὅτῳ μηδὲ εἷς ἐστι χρηστὸς φίλοςLife is not worth living if you do not have at least one friend.

Democritus, DK 68b22

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f. pl.
Meaning: young animals, small lams (ι 222).
Origin: see ἔρση
Etymology: Prob. just metonymic = ἕρση dew. Thus δρόσος in A. and Call. (s. s. v.), cf. also μητέρες ψακαλοῦχοι (S. Fr. 793) with ψάκαλον (Ar. Byz.) from ψακάς fine rain, drops; more in Bechtel Lex. s. ἕρση. - After Leumann Hom. Wörter 258 n. 11 δρόσος as young animal in A. and Call. from imitation of ι 222 and ἕρσαι a homonym to ἕρση dew.

Frisk Etymology German

ἕρσαι: {hérsai}
Grammar: f. pl.
Meaning: Jungtiere, kleine Lämmer (ι 222).
Etymology : Wohl nur metonymisch = ἕρση Tau. Ebenso δρόσος bei A. und Kall. (s. s. v.), vgl. noch μητέρες ψακαλοῦχοι (S. Fr. 793) mit ψάκαλον (Ar. Byz.) von ψακάς Staubregen, Tropfen; Näheres bei Bechtel Lex. s. ἕρση. — Nach Leumann Hom. Wörter 258 A. 11 wäre δρόσος im Sinn von Jungtier bei A. und Kall. durch Imitation von ι 222 entstanden und ἕρσαι Jungtiere ein Homonym zu ἕρση Tau.
