Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: σφῆκες, η ζῳ̃ον ὅμοιον μελίσσῃ H., Hdn. Gr. 1, 89.
Derivatives: δελλίθια ἀνθρήνια. οἱ δε κηρία H. (ἀνθρήνια wasps nests?)
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Seems formed like ὄρνι-θες. I see no reason to connect βελόνη (s. v.). The geminate λλ could continue a phoneme ly, so the word would be Pre-Greek. Forms from Lower Italy in Rohlfs WB 520.
