   A crystalline rock, which sparkles (μαρμαίρει) in the light, μάρμαρος ὀκριόεις Il.12.380, Od.9.499, cf. E.Ph.663 (lyr.), Ar. Ach.1172 (lyr.): as Adj., πέτρος μ. ὀκριόεις Il.16.735, cf. E.Ph.1401, etc.    II later, marble, μάρμαρον ἢ λίθον λευκήν Hp.Mul.2.185, cf. Thphr.Lap.9: also fem., μαρμάρου . . τῆς Πεντελικῆς μέταλλα Str. 9.1.23; μ. λίθος Id.14.1.35: hence,    2 work in marble, i.e. tombstone, τυκτὴ μ.
