Aeol. πέδιλλον Choerob. in An.Ox.2.239 : τό : (πέδη) :— mostly in pl.,

   A sandals, ἀμφὶ πόδεσσιν . . ἀράρισκε π., τάμνων δέρμα βόειον Od.14.23 ; ὑπὸ ποσσὶν ἐδήσατο καλὰ π. ἀμβρόσια χρύσεια, τά μιν φέρον ἠμὲν ἐφ' ὑγρὴν ἠδ' ἐπ' ἀπείρονα γαῖαν, of Hermes, Il.24.340 ; of Athena, Od. 1.96 ; πτερόεντα π. Hes.Sc.220 ; ποτανά E.El.460 (lyr.).    II any covering for the feet, shoes or boots, π. ἐς γόνυ ἀνατείνοντα Hdt.7.67 ; περὶ τοὺς πόδας τε καὶ τὰς κνήμας π. νεβρῶν ib.75, cf. Pi.P.4.95, Plu.Thes.3 ; ἱμάτιον καθαρὸν καὶ καινὰ π. Ar.Av.973.    III metaph., Δωρίῳ φωνὰν ἐναρμόξαι π., i.e. to write in Doric rhythm (cf. πούς), Pi. O.3.5 ; also ἐν τούτῳ π. πόδ' ἔχειν to have one's foot in this shoe, i.e. to be in this condition or fortune, ib.6.8.
