A = πελάζω, bring near, once in Hes., Βορέας . . δρῦς . . πιλνᾷ χθονί brings them to earth, Op.510 ; also intr., δόμοισι πιλνᾷς thou drawest nigh to the house, h.Cer.115 (nisi leg. πίλνασαι) :—elsewh. Pass. πίλνᾰμαι (with no act. form πίλνημι), draw near to, approach, c. dat., ἅρματα χθονὶ πίλνατο the chariots went close to the ground, Il. 23.368 ; ἐπ' οὔδει πίλναται 19.93, cf. A.R.4.952, Simm.7 : abs. with two subjects, Γαῖα καὶ Οὐρανὸς πίλνατο earth and sky threatened to encounter (in the storm), Hes.Th.703 :—πίτναντο must be read for πίλναντο with Aristarch. and some codd. in Il.22.402 ; conversely πίλναντο for πίτναντο in Euph.63.2.
