One compares since Fick 1, 466 a word for <b class="b2">valley etc.</b>, which is found in Germanic, Slavic, and Celtic, e. g. Goth. <b class="b2">dal(s</b>) m. or n. [[φάραγξ]], [[βόθυνος]], OWNo. [[dalr]] [[valley]], [[arch]], OCS [[dolъ]] [[βάραθρον]], [[λάκκος]], Russ. [[dol]] [[valley]], [[lower part]], Welsh [[dol]] f. [[valley]]. Prop. meaning then *`bowing, bending', from where <b class="b2">vault(ing)</b>, resp. [[hollow]] (see Huisman KZ 71, 103); improbable. Often connected with <b class="b3">θάλαμος</b>, e. g. E. Maaß RhM 77, 1ff.; against this Wahrmann Glotta 19, 213. - Cf. Bq and Pok. 245f. - The variation <b class="b3">α</b>\/<b class="b3">ο</b> is typical of Pre-Greek.
