In the meaning [[way]], [[path]] it can be however an old variant of <b class="b3">πόντος</b>; <b class="b3">πατέω</b> is then denominative. Schwyzer 726 (a. 705) leaves the matter open. Wrong Moorhouse Class Quart. 35, 90ff. -- DELG doubts the connection with <b class="b3">πόντος</b>. (Further s. [[πόντος]].) <b class="b3">πατέω</b> has no etym.
