Form. 431.<br />Origin: IE [Indo-European] [146] <b class="b2">*bhuh₂-</b> [[grow]]<br />Etymology: From <b class="b3">α</b> privativum and <b class="b3">φύω</b> (one compares [[nonnats]] [[Aphua pellucida]] in Nice) seems folk etymology, but see now Meier-Brügger, MSS 52, 1991, 123 - 125, who defends derivation from <b class="b2">*n̥-bhuH-o-</b> [[without growth]] (a recent formation as against Skt. <b class="b2">ábhva-</b> [[monster]], [[Unwesen]] < <b class="b2">*n̥-bhu-o-</b> with loss of laryngeal). The accentuation of the gen. pl. <b class="b3">ἀφύων</b> (not <b class="b3">-ῶν</b>, Hdn. Gr. 1. 425, 13) points to an unextended stem <b class="b3">ἀφυ-</b> (nom. <b class="b3">*ἀφυ-ς</b>), cf. <b class="b3">φυγή</b>, <b class="b3">φύγα-δε</b>. Perh. also in Myc. <b class="b2">aphu-we</b>, <b class="b2">-de</b>. (Not with Bechtel, Dial. 3, 285: <b class="b3">ἀφύη</b> from the colour; rather the other way round).
