With <b class="b3">γ-</b>enlargement <b class="b3">πελιγόνες</b> m. pl. = <b class="b3">γέροντες</b> (Lac., Massal.), = <b class="b3">οἱ ἐν τιμαῖς</b> (Maced.; after Str. 7 Fr. 2); <b class="b3">πελιγᾶνες οἱ ἔνδοξοι</b>. <b class="b3">παρὰ δε Σύροις οἱ βουλευταί</b> H. -- Also <b class="b3">Πέλ-οψ</b> (Kretschmer Glotta 27, 5 a. 28, 236f.)?; quite uncertain.<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]<br />Etymology: Built like <b class="b3">ὀπιδνός</b>, <b class="b3">ἀλαπαδνός</b>, <b class="b3">ὀλοφυδνός</b> a.o., either as enlargement of <b class="b3">πελιός</b> or as transformation of the older <b class="b3">πελιτνός</b>, which has the same orig. only fem. suffix combination as Skt. <b class="b2">páliknī</b> f. from <b class="b2">*pali-t-n-ī</b> [[grey]] beside m. <b class="b2">pali-t-á-</b> (= Gr. <b class="b3">*πελιτός</b>; from there <b class="b3">πελιτ-νός</b> after the fem.?). If one sparates the <b class="b2">t-</b>suffix (cf. Skt. <b class="b2">hári-</b>, <b class="b2">hári-t-a-</b> [[greenyellow]], [[sallow]]; s. <b class="b3">χλόη</b>, <b class="b3">χλωρός</b>) we arrive at an <b class="b2">i-</b>stem, which seems also retained in <b class="b3">πελιός</b> (prob. for <b class="b3">*πελι-Ϝό-ς</b>; cf. on <b class="b3">πολιός</b>), <b class="b3">πελι-γόνες</b>, <b class="b3">-γᾶνες</b>, perhaps also in <b class="b3">πελλός</b> (if from <b class="b3">*πελι̯ός</b>). But the last can also stand for <b class="b3">*πελ-νός</b>, for which esp. <b class="b3">πιλνόν φαιόν</b> H. (with restored <b class="b3">-λν-</b>) seems to speak(?). Still a different formation is shown by <b class="b3">πέλεια</b>, perh. also <b class="b3">πελαργός</b> (?; s. vv.). -- WP. 2, 53f., Pok. 804f., W.-Hofmann s. [[palleō]] w. rich lit. The forms in <b class="b3">-δνος</b> and those with <b class="b3">-γ-</b> rather suggest a Pre-Greek word (note also the deviant <b class="b3">πιλνός</b>).
