[[nerk]], <b class="b2">-oy</b> [[colour]], if from IE *(<b class="b2">s)negʷro-</b>. It is derived from [[nerk-anem]] [[colour]], which has the form of a primary verb (aor. [[nerk-i]]). But the word for [[deer]] has nothing to do with it. Deer and hind are often called after their colour, e.g. [[πρόξ]], [[προκάς]] <b class="b2">deer- or roe-like animal</b> to [[περκνός]] [[speckled]], <b class="b3">πρεκνόν ποικιλόχροον ἔλαφον</b> H. Also Lat. [[niger]] [[black]] has been compared; on the meaning cf. a.o. [[περκνός]] also [[darkspotted]], [[blackish]] and Porzig Gliederung 167 (doubts in W.-Hofmann s.v.).
