Perh. with dissimilation for IE <b class="b2">*kʷerōr</b> and so belonging with [[τέρας]] [[marvel]], [[monster]] (Osthoff Arch. f. Religionswiss. 8, 51 ff.); [[sub verbo|s.v.]] with further connections. -- To be rejected Bechtel Lex. s. v. (where important details): after Benfey, Solmsen a.o. to OHG <b class="b2">(h)wal</b> etc. [[whale]]. -- The supposed <b class="b2">*kʷer-or</b> does not easily explain [[τέρας]] (from <b class="b2">*kʷerh₂-s</b>?), so this word should better be left aside. So there is no etymology.
