Με τον όρο μέτοικος εννοείτο κατά την αρχαιότητα εκείνος που κατοικούσε στα όρια μιας πόλης-κράτους αλλά δεν καταγόταν από αυτήν. Οι μέτοικοι είχαν συνήθως περιορισμένα ή καθόλου πολιτικά δικαιώματα. Ο όρος είναι κυρίως γνωστός από την αρχαία Αθήνα, την πόλη που συγκέντρωνε τους περισσότερους ξένους λόγω της αίγλης και της οικονομικής ανάπτυξής της.
