οὐδέποτε: Difference between revisions

[[and not ever]] or [[nor ever]], [[not even ever]] or [[never]], in Hom. mostly with past tenses, <span class="bibl">Il.1.155</span>, <span class="bibl">5.789</span>, al.: but with pres., <span class="bibl">Od.10.464</span>, <span class="bibl">Hes.<span class="title">Th.</span>759</span>: with fut., <span class="bibl">Od.2.203</span>, <span class="bibl">Hes.<span class="title">Op.</span>176</span>; in Att., [[οὐδέποτε]] is commonly found with pres. or fut. (or its equivalent, as in οὐδέποτε μὴ λειφθῇ <span class="title">SIG</span>800.29 (Lycosura, i A. D.)), [[οὐδεπώποτε]] with past tenses, so οὐδέποτε ἐπὶ μέλλοντος... ἐπὶ δὲ παρῳχημένου τὸ οὐδεπώποτε <span class="bibl">Phryn.<span class="title">PS</span>p.91</span> B.: but [[οὐδέποτε]] occurs with past tenses in <span class="title">Com.Adesp.</span>23 (cited by Phryn. [[οὐδέποτε]] [[tam in praeterito quam in futuro]], [[quomodo et nos 'nunquam]]', Priscian.<span class="title">Inst.</span> 18.257: in late writers the reference of πω to past time was neglected, v. [[οὐδεπώποτε]], and cf. [[ἐξ]] ὧν ἀνάγκη… μηδεπώποτε ἐλευθερίας ἐπιτυγχάνειν <span class="bibl">D.Chr.14.1</span>; cf. <b class="b3">οὐδέπω, οὔποτε, οὔπω, οὐπώποτε</b>, also [[μηδέποτε]], [[μηπώποτε]].—In Hom. <b class="b3">οὐδέ ποτε</b> should prob. be written divisim: sometimes a word is put between, as in <span class="bibl">Il.6.99</span>.
