Als das Wort [[γέρων]] neben der Bedeutung »der Vornehme« die Bedeutung »der Greis« angenommen hatte, setzte sich für den zugehörigen Begriff »Greisenalter« die gedehnte Form [[γῆρας]] fest, während die ältere Form [[γέρας]] für die ursprüngliche Bedeutung der »Ehre« blieb. Aehnlich verhält sich [[γηραιός]] zu [[γεραιός]]. Vgl. z. B. [[ξερός]] [[ξηρός]], [[ἔθος]] [[ἦθος]]. Von [[γῆρας]] ist gen. γήραος, Att. γήρως, dat. γήραϊ, Att. γήρᾳ, vgl. [[γῆρος]]; Hom. Das Wort kommt von Hom. an überall vor; es wird von Dichtern auch auf leblose Dinge übertragen, so Aesch. Sept. 682 οὐκ ἔστι [[γῆρας]] τοῦδε τοῦ μιάσματος, solchen Frevel tilgt oder mindert die Zeit nicht, er bleibt frisch. In der Redensart γήραος [[οὐδός]], »die Schwelle des Alters«, Odyss. 15, 246. 348. 23, 212 Iliad. 22, 60. 24, 487, ist γήραος genit. definitivus, das Alter ist eben der [[οὐδός]], die Schwelle, nämlich des Lebens; vgl.
