A throb, beat violently (cf. σφυγμός), Hp.Epid.2.5.16, 2.6.5, Judic.33, Theoc.11.71. 2 beat, of the pulse, σ. τὸ αἷμα ἐν ταῖς φλεψί Arist.HA521a6; πηδῶσα οἷον τὰ σφύζοντα like the veins or arteries, Pl.Phdr.251d; μέρος [ἐμβρύου] μήτε θερμὸν μήτε σφύζον Sor.2.63. 3 metaph. of any violent motion, σφύζοντος καὶ σφαδᾴζοντος καὶ πηδῶντος Longin.Rh. p.201 H., cf.
