(1) draco1, ōnis, m. (δράκων), der Drache, I) eig., bei den Griechen und nach ihnen bei den Römern jede größere Art unschädlicher Schlangen, die auch von ihnen als Haustiere, bes. von Damen u. Weichlingen als Spielzeug gehalten wurden, Cic. u.a.: iubatus, Cornif. rhet. Vgl. Casaub. Suet. Tib. 72. Böttigers Sabina 2, 288. – II) meton.: A) der Drache, ein nördliches Gestirn (rein lat. anguis u. serpens gen.), Cic. de nat. deor. 2, 106 sq. – B) eine Vorrichtung, um schnell Wasser zu wärmen. Sie bestand in einem Kessel, der ringsum mit einer Anzahl Röhren versehen war, die den Windungen einer Schlange glichen, so daß die ganze Wassermenge zu gleicher Zeit u. in kleinen Mengen der Einwirkung des Feuers ausgesetzt war, der Drache, Sen. nat. qu. 3, 24, 2. – C) eine alte Rebe, Plin. 14, 12 u.a. – D) draco marinus, ein Seefisch, nach Bloch Trachinus Draco (L), das Petermännchen, Plin. 9, 82. – E) eine Standarte, das von den Parthern entlehnte u. zu Trajans Zeiten im röm.
